报告摘要
The Advanced Heat Transfer and Surface Technologies Laboratory at the University of Alberta was created with a view to conducting industry-relevant research in the area of thermal-sprayed surface modifications and to provide experiential research training to students and other practitioners. Work has also been undertaken on the development of smart coatings for structure damage detection, development of enhanced protective clothing solutions, and the development of coatings for biomedical applications. In this seminar, a brief overview of the breadth of research activities will be presented along with a mention of the industry collaborations and practical applications of some of the studies. A detailed discussion of recent experimental and modelling work relating to the fabrication, performance testing, and analysis of flame-sprayed resistive heating coatings for applications on pipes and airfoils and cold-sprayed wear resistant metal matrix composite coatings will be presented. The presentation will highlight the microstructure of the coatings, the effect of microstructure on the operational performance of the coatings, and mathematical modelling that has enabled qualification of the performance of the coatings. The seminar will end with a brief mention of future directions for research and international collaboration. Throughout the presentation, it will be emphasized that the research could be viewed as a nexus of selected elements of mechanical engineering, materials science, and heat transfer.
